PROGRAM:
Kristy Fralick introduced her dad Bill Kanine who traps animals as a hobby. It is something he taught himself to do growing up on a river in Shepard MI. In college he sold pelts to earn extra money. Trapping is regulated, there are seasons and limits which are based on population. Size and type of trap is also strictly regulated. The land traps in particular are designed to prevent accidental trappings of domesticated animals. He had a wide selection of pelts of animlas he has trapped here in Northern Michigan, told a fun story about a bobcat, and showed some antique traps which are no longer legal. Traps can not have any type of serrated edge. Pelts are still sold, depending on the animal and the quality of the pelt, the price ranges anywhere from $20 to over $300.

They provide safe and challenging adventure activities which enhance character building. Youth activities include hiking and canoeing/paddling trips both local and in Canada. For corporate groups they provide opportunities to focus on communication and team building, Rotary members that had participated spoke to its effectiveness. All those who participate follow a full value agreement: working as a team, being physically and emotionally safe, speaking up when something is not right. Challenge by choice is another part of the adventure center, each person decides how far they want to push themselves. Camp Dagget staff are looking to us for referrals, both for the youth and corporate programs.

(select for enlarged pict)
PROGRAM:
Jenny Brower introduced Jan Smith and Katie MacInnis who run the Thursday Noon Meal (soup kitchen) for the Emmauel Episcopal Church. This group provides a meal every Thursday at the Presbyterian Church in Petoskey, whose location is much better suited to those that need to walk. They are looking to businesses and other groups who would be willing to commit to providing the meal on a regular basis. If they could get all the Thursday's covered, they could move to another day of the week, ensuring those in need could have at least one meal a day. The set up is easy and dishes are provided - it is a matter of providing enough food for approximately 20 people and being there to serve and clean-up. As with so many other giving opportunities, what you receive greatly outweighs what you give. If your place of business, or other group is interested in assisting with the soup kitchen please contact either Jan or Katie through the Episcopal Church in Petoskey.

PROGRAM
Tim Petroski a representative of CMS Land spoke to the clean up of Bay Harbor and East Park, known as the Little Traverse Bay Environmental Project. The site, which was an abandoned Cement Plant, left behind millions of cubic yards of cement kiln dust. Prior to the development of Bay Harbor this was a problem, in fact the development stopped 65% of the chemicals. Many environmental protection updates have been established to stop the leeching into the bay. These including using diversion wells to stop water from running through the kiln piles, and collection lines which collect the acidic water so it can be shipped off site and emptied into special wells. Rarely does the water surpassed a PH of 9 and mercury levels have been reduced. CMS Land is committed to protecting the bay. You can view more information on this issue at

PROGRAM
Jane Millar from Northern Community Mediation presented on the shoplifting prevention program. This is a program they put together to prevent kids from stealing things from stores, an issue that costs retailers a considerable amount of money each year. Jane presented a movie that was produced with local actors by the Boyne City Media program which is presented to 4th grade students. Currently due to many different revenue sources the program is free to schools. Northern Mediation has a program to help youth, they work closely with probate court. If a youth successfully completes the program and never gets arrested again for shoplifting there will be no criminal record. If they are arrested a second time, Northern Mediation can inform the courts that it is a repeat offense.

(select for enlarged pict)
PROGRAM
The District Governor, Bob Gandolfir and his wife Diane were visiting today. Bob talked about the Year of the Challenge and the Year of the Children. The year of the children has to do with the fact that 26,000 children die everyday from preventable causes. Assistance is needed with providing clean water, improving health, decreasing hunger and improving literacy. Bill and Melinda Gates have provided a match grant of $100 million to Rotary International. Rotary International needs to raise 100 million over 3 years which equates to about $1,000 per club each year. This would go toward eradicating Polio. The second challenge he issued regards membership, he would like to see all clubs increase their membership by 10% this year and keep then find a way to keep new members engaged so they stay in the club. His last request is that each club have 100% participation in supporting Rotary's General Fund.

The biggest issue for scheduling has been with basketball, Petoskey HS has 6 teams they are trying to schedule every week. They anticipate this year will go more smoothly than last, currently they try to schedule the girls away when the boys are home and vice-versa. They continue to pull ideas from other schools, Gary anticipates in 5 years we'll look back and wonder what all the fuss was about. Participation in sports remains strong, Petoskey currently has 20 varsity sports offered to students.

1) The 5/10 K Run/Walk for Charities is falling in place. 21 club members have raised just shy of $6000 in sponsorships! Great job Rod and club members!!!!
It is now time to focus hard the next 3-4 weeks to get local participation. We suggest each club member do three things.
* Send the electronic flyer to friends and potential participants (use your email address book)
* Circulate the flyer at your workplace to encourage participation
*Specifically ask people to participate.
Andy suggests you focus on the fun “walk” aspect as there are many more walkers out there. It all goes to a good cause.
Next week, Jerry and Kristy will be circulating the “race day assignments” for club members. This will be a great event but to pull it off, we need everyone to help out that day. EVERYONE needs to sign up to help, we will need plenty of spotters along the trail to keep racers on the right path.
