PROGRAM:
Tom Spencer, Northern Michigan Hospital Public Affairs Coordinator. Started the job in June, 2002. He came from Munson Medical. The hospital has tried to communicate in writing to the union, with little progress. The Teamsters want to require all nurses to pay dues or be fired, which the hospital won't agree to. The hospital feels that the 'union shop' issue is the critical issue. Mediators have been involved as requested by a recent petition by local citizens. The hospital says it is done negotiating. PROGRAM:
Nicki Kenney, a former ER nurse, is head of the Community Free Clinic. 42 million Americans are without health care. Those without health care do not go to the doctor when they should, causing the problems to get worse & at a greater cost to heal. Typically, they are low income families or individuals that lack health care in all age groups. The Petoskey Free Clinic started in Jan. '98 using the Red Cross building once a week. They moved into the professional office building next to Lockwood Hospital on Arlington in Sept. '99. Nicki has been the only paid staff until last summer - mostly run by volunteers - including doctors & nurse professionals. With the high quality of doctors in the area, the standard of care has been very high. Their major expense is medications. They do refer patients to some specialists as needed and work out an arrangement for surgery with the hospital. There is another free clinic in Traverse City, but no other in the area or in all of the UP.
She pointed out the alarming changes in health care in the US lately. Medicade cuts are tremendous. They have to raise money through civic groups, businesses, the casino revenue sharing, etc. Community support is needed. This years budget is $140,000 (mostly for salaries & drugs). Last year they saw 1140 patients & 830 the year before. She has been able to get drug samples from drug companies, but it requires a lot of paperwork - necessitating the hiring of a part time helper. The clinic is open daily, but only sees patients on Wed. evenings. They are accepting scarves and mittens at the clinic now for patients who need winter clothing.

It was established in 1882. Since they are self supporting without government funding, the Northern Lower Michigan Chapter has started the 'Great Northern Fish-In' - a fund raiser modeled after the Chicago cows sculptures. These fiberglass fish are over 5' long & 3' high. 30 fish have already been sponsored - with a goal of 50 fish sponsored & painted by the end of May. The cost is $2000 for a fish (if donated for auction after the summer) or $3000 to keep. It is $1200 if sponsored for a school to design & paint. The fish cost the Red Cross $650 & $800 is paid to the artist that paints it. The rest is donated to the Red Cross for local needs. Their web site will display all the fish as they are completed -
www.GreatFish-In.com. Nancy had drawings of many of the designs submitted by artists - see pictures.

They are often able to point people to other agencies that can help them as well. They are looking for donated cars. Goodwill handles repairs up to 3 months after transfer. Car values have to be over $2000, but not over $5000 to keep all recipients on an equal basis. Recipients have to pay for insurance, taxes, etc. They have given out 9 cars since forming this fall in the Charlevoix - Emmet counties.

PROGRAM:
Sheri Rhoads representing Northern Lake Economic Alliance (NLEA). Sheri is an Economic Development Specialist with NLEA & their mission is to help business to start up, expand or relocate here to Northern Michigan. Today she told us about the plan to improve the hi-speed telecommunication services to our area. A 2000 Michigan Economic Development Corp. report showed the improvement of this service "is the most important state economic infrastructure issue for the new century". She is on a steering committee to help make this happen in Northern Michigan. Many new businesses and manufacturing facilities really need broadband to do their daily jobs. Thus, this is a requirement for them to locate here. NLEA is developing a study & a plan for this to happen called LinkNLEA. Some examples of how this works are Petoskey schools, where the entire school district (6 buildings + admin building) are entirely wired & interconnected with fiber optics. American Spoon Foods also setup their web site in 1995 & now about 30% of their business is mail order. With 1% of their initial sales over the web, now that is up to 28%. NLEA will be calling businesses in the area for a user needs assessment. Their web site is
www.linknlea.org. Gary Appold, from the Emmet County IT Department, joined her to answer any technical questions.

He thought the critical issue for the union is to have a 'closed shop'. If they had a closed shop, 20-30% of the working nurses would leave. The hospital is hiring nurses now to replace the US Nurses to reduce their costs. They plan to get even by the end 2004.

Terry Newton & Pat McGinn from Harbor Hall. Harbor Hall was incorporated in 1973 & Terry has been with them for 13 years. It was originally incorporated as a halfway house. After 5 years it changed into a long term residential treatment program for up to 90 days. Since then they have bought the 2 houses next to them on the block for use for graduates of the program. They can then be there for 6 months to a year with certain requirements - inc. attending 3 AA programs per week. Most men abuse alcohol, but they are seeing an increase in drug abuse. In 1992 the Outpatient program was started. They also help kids in schools with the COATS (Community Offering Assistance To Students) program. It is basically a mentoring program for youth. Terry noted that alcoholism is a disease & that it doesn't discriminate - it hits men & women - young & old alike. There is indication that it is hereditary. They have 18+ men in residence now with 1-3 month waiting list- The residence houses can handle 38 beds & they run at 99% capacity. The outpatient program handles both genders. They see a 33% success rate with their work, but hopefully plant a seed in some of the others. Their website is Harborhall.com.

May eventually have another track at current high school - probably 5-7 years from now. Then can still use both tracks - for practice, Middle School use, etc. May be able to bring back the Petoskey Relays. Very few meets are currently held at Petoskey because of the poor track.

June 2005 is the 100th Anniversary of Rotary International with the world convention in Chicago. The first of 70 World Peace Scholars will graduate this year. Polio eradication in the world should be completed by 2005 with a successful fund drive this year to finance the last countries. He asks us to focus on retention & recruitment, with emphasis on retention. Foundation giving has been flat in the past 5 years. They are asking for "Every member, every year" - an annual $100 donation. "Lend a Hand" is this year's theme. Three aspects of it are: Take action, make Rotary family friendly; Improve the quality of membership in Rotary; and Lend a hand, both locally & internationally. June 10-13, 2004 is the District Conference in Grand Haven with the theme of "Together We Can".
He made some suggestions: Formalize priorities & assign responsibilities; Appoint "Family of Rotary" point person; Identify a Centennial Committee for the project (Marilyn Fitzgerald is the district rep for the projects) & Plan for continuity of leadership (George Trowbridge is the district rep for leadership).
