PROGRAM:
Nicki Kenney, a former ER nurse, is head of the Community Free
Clinic. 42 million Americans are without health care. Those without
health care do not go to the doctor when they should, causing
the problems to get worse & at a greater cost to heal. Typically,
they are low income families or individuals that lack health
care in all age groups. The Petoskey Free Clinic started in Jan.
'98 using the Red Cross building once a week. They moved into
the professional office building next to Lockwood Hospital on
Arlington in Sept. '99. Nicki has been the only paid staff until
last summer - mostly run by volunteers - including doctors &
nurse professionals. With the high quality of doctors in the
area, the standard of care has been very high. Their major expense
is medications. They do refer patients to some specialists as
needed and work out an arrangement for surgery with the hospital.
There is another free clinic in Traverse City, but no other in
the area or in all of the UP.
She pointed out the alarming changes in health care in the US
lately. Medicade cuts are tremendous. They have to raise money
through civic groups, businesses, the casino revenue sharing,
etc. Community support is needed. This years budget is $140,000
(mostly for salaries & drugs). Last year they saw 1140 patients
& 830 the year before. She has been able to get drug samples
from drug companies, but it requires a lot of paperwork - necessitating
the hiring of a part time helper. The clinic is open daily, but
only sees patients on Wed. evenings. They are accepting scarves
and mittens at the clinic now for patients who need winter clothing. |
